More than a century ago, the western Queensland township of Roma was known as the site of Australia's first petroleum strike which took place at Hospital Hill.
The town's major tourism attraction, The Big Rig, pays tribute to Roma's oil and gas industry which began in 1900 with the Hospital Hill strike.
Located on an old oil derrick on the outskirts of the town, The Big Rig is now part of the Queensland Heritage Trails Network which links 43 authentic heritage attractions on major drive routes across the State.
The complex features two historic oil rigs, the oldest being the US-built EMSCO rig which was used to drill holes north of Roma between 1929 and 1941 before being abandoned atop its last hole on the property, "Nurraburra". The EMSCO Rig and second rig, the T32, were transported to The Big Rig site in 1990.
Known as the 'Capital of the Western Downs' and a gateway to the Outback, Roma is the commercial centre of the Maranoa district where vast grazing areas support cattle and sheep, and grain production. |
