Cape York Heritage Centre, Coen

  Coen
Pastoralism and mining have been the backbone of industry in Cape York Peninsula, while the telegraph opened up communication networks. These very networks carried the news of Federation across the vast expanse of Cape York.

With $70,000 in funding from the Queensland Heritage Trails Network, the former telegraph station in Coen has been conserved and interpretation has been developed to illustrate the history of the building. These include communications in remote regions, gold mining and pastoralism, with particular focus on the role of indigenous people in the pastoral industry.
