Global Arts Link, a dynamic art gallery and social history museum, is located in Ipswich’s refurbished and expanded Old Town Hall, a local focal point with its striking facade and clock tower. With a contribution of $3 million from the Queensland Heritage Trails Network, Global Arts Link explores the stories of the past whilst enabling visitors to Ipswich to explore the culture of today.
Dating back to the 1860s, this heritage-listed structure remains a popular meeting place for the community. Built in 1861 as a Mechanic Institute "School of Arts", the building was the focus of many cultural, commercial and civic events for more than a century.
The town hall has been refurbished and redeveloped into a new building retaining its original heritage assets and providing new, modern exhibition spaces. Today it is still a focus for the exchange of ideas and the gaining of experience, albeit now via the latest interactive and digital technology.
Global Arts Link was created out of the Ipswich community’s demand for a special welcoming place that catalogued the rich history and industrial heritage of this early Queensland city. |
