Outback @ Isa

  Mount Isa
Mounta Isa's premier tourist attraction and celebration of rich mining and cultural heritage, Outback at Isa, combines four top attractions:
  • The Riversleigh Fossil Research Centre, with a resident palaeontologist
  • Isa Experience Gallery and Museum
  • The Hard Times Mine with frequent underground mine tours
  • The Outback Park
In addition, the Outback at Isa complex provides visitor information, is the Greyhound Coach Terminal, operates surface tours of the Mine and has a cafe and gift shop. At “The Hard Times Mine” visitors take a guided tour through its 1.2km of underground tunnels as the evolution of mining over the past 70 years is demonstrated. You experience the sights, sounds and sensations of a miner's life, faithfully recreated by our experienced mining guides.

Wearing protective clothing, visitors will enter the shaft in a cage lowered from a historic headframe donated by Mount Isa Mines to the park. It was the first modern headframe used at the mines. Former miners guide the tours, which run regularly from 10am to 7pm.

Outback at Isa is a major tourism precinct in the centre of the Isa – a fantastic home base for travellers discovering the Queensland Outback.

Outback at Isa brings to life the essence of the Outback – the landscapes, flora, fauna, pre history, indigenous culture and early settlement. Interpretive walking trails set amongst local flora where visitors can view the region’s pre historic fossils at the fossil treatment laboratory, incorporating the Riversleigh Fossil Research Centre.
