Artspace Mackay, Mackay

  Artspace Mackay
Located mid way between Brisbane and Cairns on the Central Queensland coast, Mackay’s rich arts and history now has a permanent home at Artspace Mackay.

Mackay has its own art gallery and exhibition space to give visitors and locals alike a real sense of the region’s colourful heritage.

Designed to reflect a new spirit of galleries that are highly accessible to the community, Artspace Mackay is located within the Mackay Civic Precinct close to the Mackay Entertainment Centre, ANZAC Park and Mackay City Library.

With its angular form and oversailing roof, the building’s innovative architectural design combines copper, pre-cast concrete and ribbed steel. The modern design incorporates a 270 metre square international standard gallery for a continuously changing program of local and travelling exhibitions; a gallery housing a permanent Spirit and Place exhibition on Mackay and the surrounding region’s history; a seminar room; and gourmet café opening onto the park.

Artspace Mackay houses a unique collection of over 300 Artists’ Books in the Tate Adams Reading Room. The Mackay collection is of national significance and provides an insight into the artistic niche of artists books, where artists create books as artworks.

Artists’ Books come in all forms, shapes and sizes, and are made from a range of materials including wood, acrylic, handmade paper and stone. The Tate Adams reading room is designed as a small sanctuary in the middle of the building where visitors can explore this rare artform.
