Dogwood Crossing @ Miles is the cultural heart of Miles, integrating the visual arts, social history and literature in a single cultural centre. It was developed with a contribution of $500,000 from the Queensland Heritage Trails Network and $750,000 from Arts Queensland's Millennium Arts Regional Program.
Dogwood Crossing @ Miles comprises an art gallery, library and museum and features an ever-changing range of exhibitions and activities. Here visitors can experience life in a rural community, first-hand, using the latest multimedia technology.
Hear the story of the notorious prickly pear, learn the significance of water and the role it has played in binding the community. Be absorbed in stories describing the evolution of a country town and re-live its triumphs and challenges by means of interactive displays.
This small rural centre was originally called Dogwood Crossing, by Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, after the Dogwood shrub that grew on the creek banks.
Re-named Miles after a local Member of Parliament, the western railway line reached here and the town now lies at the intersection of the Warrego and Leichhardt Highways. |
