Discover more QUEENSLAND
On the Overlander's Way

Welcome to the Overlander’s Way, over 1,500kms of diverse landscape crossing the breadth of Queensland from Townsville to Tennant Creek. A fully sealed road, the route follows the paths of great explorers, the Kalkadoons and the pioneers. Make the time to stop and explore the side roads of the Outback towns along the way and discover the real character of the Outback.

Wind your way through the Queensland Heritage Trails Network attractions at Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Richmond, Charters Towers and Townsville where you will experience the heady gold rush days, a larger-than-life mining tour, fossils over 100 million years old, routes of former explorers and rich indigenous heritage.

12. Townsville
North Queensland Network Gateway

The new Discover North Queensland feature within Townsville's Museum of Tropical Queensland will tell the stories of North Queensland through powerful, interactive displays and introduce visitors to the Queensland Heritage Trails Network.
For those seeking to discover more about Townsville's history, QHTN is working with Townsville City Council to develop an exhibition space using art works and new technologies to tell the city's social history at Council's new Knowledge Centre that is planned for the Flinders Street Mall.

12. Townsville
North Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Cultural Centre

Early and contemporary cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in and around Townsville/Thuringowa and the North Queensland area will be showcased in the centre. As well as sharing the history of the area, the visitor will experience the revival and promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's heritage through innovative cultural, educational and informative displays.

13. Charters Towers - The World
The discovery of gold triggered a massive gold rush to Charters Towers, which grew to become the second largest city in Queensland. Now, the magnificent civic buildings of the era, including the Stock Exchange and World Theatre, have been beautifully preserved within an historic mining precinct which also includes the nearby Venus Battery mining site. The project links together the town's various historical sites
to provide a more user-friendly experience for travellers. Interpretive displays will help visitors explore Charters Towers' role in Queensland's gold mining era, when the township was known as 'The World'.

14. Kronosaurus Korner, Richmond
Kronosaurus Korner allows visitors to wonder at what life was like 100 million years ago in Richmond which was once part of an inland sea. The world-renowned collection of 200 mind-boggling separate fossil exhibits features Australia's best vertebrate fossil, the 4.25 metre Richmond Pliosaur, discovered in 1989. The increased display area and facilities, including a theatrette and children's area, have greatly enhanced the visitors' experience.

15. Outback @ Isa Explorers' Park, Mount Isa
Making the dramatic world of underground mining more accessible, visitors can be taken 15 metres below ground to a recreated mine. Above ground, interpretive displays will explain Mount Isa's mining history, Indigenous and heritage sites.
The new attraction will combine the former Police Citizens Youth Club building to be adapted for exhibition and theatre uses, and the Riversleigh Fossil Centre. Through the centre visitors can have their own underground mine experience
