Torres Strait Cultural Centre, Thursday Island

  People of Torres Strait
The Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday Island is now open!

Thursday Island is the centre for the 20 Torres Strait islands which have been part of Queensland since 1872. Just over three square km in area and 39km off the top of Cape York, Thursday Island is the most well-known of the Torres Strait Islands.

The people of the Torres Strait have long considered that a major cultural centre in the region was essential to the presentation of their unique heritage. With $1 million in funding from the Queensland Heritage Trails Network, the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday Island is a place for visitors to discover the rich culture of Torres Strait Islander people. It is a place for Torres Strait islanders to celebrate their culture and pass on traditions and stories from one generation to the next.

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre will preserve the distinctive cultural heritage of the Torres Strait. The centre provides opportunities for cultural expression and interaction with visitors and tourists. It offers the Strait's unique culture and lifestyle, the Torres Strait Culture Festival and year-round tropical weather.

The Project
A major focus of the Gab Titui Cultural Centre is to celebrate Torres Strait culture within the local community and to present and promote the region's unique heritage to Australian and international visitors. The Cultural Centre will be a hub for the community and a place to strengthen cultural identity and recognise local artists.

The name "Gab Titui" translates to "Star of our Journey". The name was selected after consulting with the 20 communities of the Torres Strait. The name incorporates both Eastern and Western Torres Strait language.

Gab Titui is the region's first public keeping place for historical and cultural artefacts and tools, as well as both modern and traditional art.
