The Waltzing Matilda Centre, in the heart of Winton, is the world’s only tourism attraction dedicated to a song. With 'homestead' buildings nestled around a peaceful billabong, the centre pays tribute to the life of the swaggie, and the true spirit of the Australian character.
The centre was upgraded with $1 million from the Queensland Heritage Trails Network. It’s a high-tech, interactive and fun experience, offering a spectacular Billabong Courtyard light and sound show, The Home of the Legend, an interactive exhibition gallery, Outback Regional Art Gallery and Qantilda Museum’s vast collection of the region’s pioneering memorabilia.
Winton is regarded as the home of Australian bush poetry, and nearby is the only place in the world you can see the fossilised footprints of a dinosaur stampede made 93 million years ago. |

- The Billabong Courtyard – the setting of the light and sound show. The roof closes, mist rises from the surface of the water and a ghostly apparition appears - the swaggie telling his own version of Australia’s greatest legend, and its impact on Australian history.
- Home of the Legend – an exciting exhibition gallery packed with interactive and static displays exploring the characters behind Waltzing Matilda and the swaggie way of life thousands of men were forced to adopt.
- Qantilda Museum – a treasure house of the region’s pioneering memorabilia, including old farm vehicles and equipment, household items and furnishings, ceramics, photographs, clothing and much more.
- The Outback Regional Art Gallery – presenting local and nationally-acclaimed artists. The gallery will present the Festival of Outback Art 2002 until November 15, 2002 as part of the Year of the Outback celebrations.
- Coolibah Country Kitchen Restaurant – award winning restaurant open daily for a meal or snack overlooking the billabong.
- The Station Store – offers Outback handcrafts, gifts, books and clothing.
