Drive Tourism Program 2000-2002: Major Project Signage

This component, involving 32 QHTN major projects and 11 projects under ‘Presenting the Wet Tropics’, will be undertaken on a case-by-case basis. The DMR ‘Guidelines for QHTN projectsignage’ sets out details for advanced and position signs in road reserves for QHTN projects. This is supported by DMR’s ‘Signing Implementation Brief for District Offices’.

As each QHTN project comes on-line, the Steering Committees will liaise directly with DMR District Offices to determine the requirements of signage for the project. The erection of the sign will be consistent with the Drive Tourism 2000-2002. Signing implementation Brief for District Officers and the Tourism Signage Guidelines on State Controlled Roads developed by DMR and TQ.

Tourism Signage Guidelines on State Controlled Roads

The Tourism Signage Guidelines on State-controlled Roads brochure was recently launched by Tourism Queensland and the Department of Main Roads. The brochure aims to provide Queensland tourist operators with an understanding of the Policy of Road Signage on Tourist Attractions. Tourism Queensland worked closely with Main Roads to develop road signage policies in the interests of tourism and road safety.

The brochure provides direction for tourist operators wanting to use road signage for their attractions and it gives them an outline of the themed routes being implemented throughout Queensland. The planned themed routes will link sites, attractions and destinations of tourism significance and will promote the tourism driving experience, providing another promotional avenue for operators to link in to.

One of the aims was to provide information to motorists in a way, which was consistent with overriding safety requirements for all road users. This initiative provides tourist operators with clear guidelines on tourism road signage.

The brochures will be distributed via Regional Tourist Organisations (RTOs), local government and Main Roads offices.
