Drive Tourism Program 2000-2002: Themed Routes & Corridor Management

Corridor Management Plans (CMP) and a staged implementation process for the Matilda, Overlanders and Warrego themed routes is being undertaken.

At the same time, the Savannah Way is a priority for QHTN. The proposed CMP for the Queensland section of the Savannah Way will provide the content detail to enhance the overarching thematic work being considered by TQ for the entire northern Savannah Way from Western Australia to Queensland.

The Warrego Highway, Matilda Way and Overlanders Way have been selected as the pilot projects for CMPs. The role of the CMP is to provide a basis for on-going development of each themed corridor. The purpose of developing a themed route or corridor is threefold:

  1. To increase visitor numbers and expenditure along each route
  2. To maximise driver confidence to allow opportunities to take alternative routes and improve road efficiency and increase road safety
  3. To raise the understanding among road travellers of the heritage and cultural assets that exist along each corridor

The Corridor Management Plan will recommend how the route can be developed and marketed into the future. The National Centre for Tourism (NCT) has been commissioned to prepare the CMPs for the three routes. As part of the development of the CMPs, significant input will be gathered from local government authorities, Regional Tourist Organisations and other key stakeholder groups.
